Independent journalist Tina-Desiree Berg reported for Status Coup from a massive No Kings protest in Los Angeles on March 28th that devolved into chaos after protesters marched to the downtown ICE prison and yelled at DHS police standing guard.
“Look at all of you, you’re a joke, nobody is scared of your bitch ass,” one protester, dressed as the Statue of Liberty, screamed through the black fence outside the ICE prison (the scene where weeks of violence occurred in June 2025 after President Trump deployed national guard and ICE to LA).
In response, DHS police officers fired off pepper balls and a staggering amount of tear gas at unarmed protesters.
Elsewhere, a swarm of LAPD officers ($2.1 billion budget) rushed in on horses and began whipping protesters with batons (photos below).
As the chaos ensued, LAPD blocked journalists from free range of movement to cover events (photo below). Simultaneously, protesters gagged in the middle of the street from tear gas irritating their lungs.
“Press must stay!” an LAPD officer shouted with her hand stretched out to block press from moving.
“That’s not what the law says!” our Desiree-Berg responded.
One protester described the horrible conditions inside the ICE prison where immigrant prisoners are being kept.
“Two toilets, no beds, just floor. It’s just empty flat rooms and there’s literally no plumbing in the South Tower. It’s already overcrowded. It’s fucked!”
