A 2028 general strike months before a presidential election?
“Mark your calendar,” UAW President Shawn Fain told Status Coup’s Jordan Chariton on Election Night in Michigan in response to Chariton’s question about whether we should set our schedule to be back in Michigan in May 2028 for a UAW-led general strike.

“We got big plans for 2028,” Fain added about the potential of a general strike with UAW and other unions joining forces.
Why May 2028? That’s when the UAW’s current labor contract with the Big Three automakers ends; and the power house auto union has already urged other unions to line up their contracts to end in May 2028—with the hopes of forming a historic, multi-union general strike…
Months before the pivotal 2028 presidential election.
And UAW workers sure have reason to fight the bosses. One of the Big Three, General Motors, is currently pouring billions into stock buybacks while other automakers continue exploiting workers.
Fain also explained to Status Coup why neither political party will get a blank check—or automatic endorsement—from the UAW.
“It’s critical that we get people that are going to be champions for the working class, that’s why we quit endorsing people just because they have a [specific] party affiliation. Either you’re gonna do the work, get behind working class people and if you’re not, we’re not gonna be there— no matter what party you are.”
