We are LIVE from Newark, New Jersey outside a federal courthouse where attorneys for Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian activist who helped organize and lead Columbia University’s 2024 student protests and encampments against Israel’s assault on Gaza, will appear in court in defense of Khalil. Khalil—who is a legal permanent resident with a green card and married to an American citizen—was detained by ICE on March 8th and sent to an ICE facility in Louisiana. Supporters for Khalil will be at the courthouse to show solidarity against what many believe is a blatantly unconstitutional and illegal attempt to criminalize free speech and remove free speech protections for pro-Palestinian protesters.
