Although consistently reporting ON-THE-GROUND is expensive and difficult, the advantage of doing so comes in having the ability to capture incredible moments in which normal Americans do righteous and heroic things. A week ago, our new reporter JT Cestkowski, while reporting ON-THE-GROUND in Chicago—after ICE shot a local Chicago woman in a majority Hispanic neighborhood—captured a powerful exchange between a local Hispanic man confronting a Hispanic border patrol agent (video above). The border patrol agent, along with ICE agents, have invaded Chicago over the course of the last month, terrorizing communities and abducting both undocumented immigrants AND U.S. citizens.

What the man said—which caused the border patrol agent to essentially flee—honestly gave me chills.

“Where’s Texas? You’ve gotta to be ashamed! You’re gonna use that gun on your people? Shame on you! I hope right now you’re ancestors are looking at you. Look at you right now brother. Stand up! Stand up! How did your family get here? How did your family get here? You of all people…don’t walk away from me. My tax money put you in school. You came here without no papers, now you’re an American? Thank you! What a way to pay us back? We love you brother, don’t forget that. Everybody take a picture of you. You know why? The Internet is so good. You’re gonna be a movie star, you’re gonna be a movie star! Come over here Mr. American! Your heart has to be hurting! We have two Mexican Americans, bring it into our family. I tell you brother, I tell you. You’re gonna be famous!
