On Thursday, as we reported LIVE ON THE GROUND as President Trump’s ICE Army continued attacking unarmed Minneapolis protesters with chemical gas and other ammunition, several members of the Oglala Sioux Native American Tribal Council arrived at the ICE prison located within the Whipple Federal Building—looking for three of their tribal members who have been kidnapped by ICE.

Outside the Minneapolis federal building, our Zach Roberts spoke with Chase Iron Eyes, an attorney and member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, about the shock and shame of ICE abducting the most American among us. Iron Eyes told Status Coup:

“They couldn’t find their three Tribal members; tribal members are also citizens of the United States since 1924—there’s nobody more American than American Indians. But they were unable to find them here today. We’re in unprecedented times. They came all the way here to retrieve their tribal members who were captured by ICE. We failed in that mission today but it will continue. We’ll find our people. It’s offensive. What America is finding out is the same colony which expropriated our land and dehumanizes us and seeks to strip us of our rights are the same forces coming here to confront all of us now. Why are they shooting peaceful American families? Why are they maiming peaceful American protesters of all races and demographics? We have to stand strong. We are America! How could you possibly target Native Americans with Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and then imprison us? That is impossible! It’s legally impossible to do that.

Trump’s ICE storm troopers is shameful—but not surprising. Before he became President, Donald Trump had a long history of racism and bigotry against Native Americans. Now, as his masked and untrained ICE storm troopers attack immigrants and American citizens alike, they are going the extra mile of abducting the original Americans—who we’ve already brutalized and stolen from for centuries.

The pain being the point is an understatement.
