Hey folks, it’s Jordan.
By the end of August, we’re currently on target to reach an awesome milestone of growing 300,000 YouTube subscribers in a year period (August 2024-August 2025) while nearing 500,000 total YouTube subscribers!
Much of this growth can be attributed to the even more important number in that one-year period: 2,000 new Status Coup members. Those additional paying members—many of you reading—have helped us:
Hire a new reporter Ashley Bishop
Make our editor Colin full-time with pay-bump
Expand the amount on ON-THE-GROUND coverage our video journalist Jon Farina can do, which has included covering nearly 200 pro-Palestinian protests as well as mass protests against President Trump’s second term, and more
Use more freelance reporters ON-THE-GROUND across the country, like the great Tine-Desiree Berg—who was a journalistic machine for us during the LA ICE raids—as well as hosts like Ron Placone, Zeynab Day, and an additional cameraman to expand our reach (like Dave Decker, who has been covering Alligator Alcatraz in Florida for us).
Upgrade equipment including a badly needed new camera as well as new microphones.
And now I’m happy to announce we’ve hired a new, full-time producer who starts next week! Most of you might not know, but in our seven-year existence, we’ve never had a producer: it’s essentially been Colin, and myself, trying to go through A TON of footage—often several hour livestreams as well as recorded interviews from on-the-ground reporting—to identify the important news, powerful moments and sound bites, and turn them into compelling videos.
***This has meant A LOT OF NIGHT AND WEEKEND WORK for both Colin and I***
The lack of a producer has also meant we don’t always have the time, resources, or ability to package and produce our content to reach a wider audience across various social media platforms. I’m excited for our new producer to join—you’ll meet her soon—and help take us to the next level.
SHORT AND SWEET: although this growth is exciting, we also now have more mouths to feed plus the constant additional expense of ON-THE-GROUND reporting (average reporting trip anywhere costs $2-3,000 for a reporter and cameraman).
As humbly as I can pose the question—do you see any other mainstream or independent outlets consistently doing the level of investigative ON-THE-GROUND reporting Status Coup does?
HELL NO!
So as the summer winds, I tell you: if even 20 percent of the several thousand people who open this email sign up today as a paying member for as low as $5-10 bucks a month, it would help us cover these costs AND DO MORE. It’s pretty simple—if we want real, living, breathing guerrilla journalism, WE HAVE TO BUILD IT TOGETHER BRICK BY BRICK.
Will you help us keep waking up the masses?
Jordan
