Following the latest lithium-ion battery fire at the Critical Mineral Recovery facility in Fredericktown, MO, nearby rivers are now littered with dead fish, raising serious environmental concerns. This marks the third major fire in four years for Interco-owned facilities.
☢️ We also look back at two previous fires at Interco’s Metaltronics Recycling Warehouse in Madison, IL—the first on March 11, 2020, and the second on August 6, 2022—that resulted in extensive property damage and environmental risk. With repeat incidents and hazardous materials involved, questions are mounting about safety standards in battery recycling facilities.☢️
The fire erupted in spite of what the company’s website calls “likely the most sophisticated automated and remote supervised and controlled fire suppression systems in the world.”
“The state-of-the-art fire prevention system is designed to detect fires before they start,” the company’s site says. “The system covers all areas where battery materials are stored or processed. It is monitored remotely 24/7 employing high-intensity industrial forward looking infrared…camera technology.”
County officials, the Missouri State Emergency Management Agency, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the company could not be immediately reached for comment.
The Moss Landing Fire Community Response Group gave out 100 soil kits for testing over the weekend. I did email that I was interested in helping but didn't get a response so I believe they got 100 volunteers to get soil samples.I got this information on Nextdoor app. They are using the services of BioMax Environmental Inc./Environmental Consulting and Certified Industrial Hygiene Services. If you need the email of this group let me know how I can send it to you. If I am violating any Y T rules I understand if you have to delete my post. And I apologize. I live in Marina and had a metallic taste that morning and thought wow that is strange. ( before I found out about the fire) It went away, been having a slight sore throat and a bit of nasal blood streaks after walks with my dog. I know that the wind has been going in a circulating ( I think the low might have been over us) as I was closely watching wind direction for about a week.
