I lost my house in 1989 with the Loma Prieta earthquake. I received a single check for $2,000 from FEMA and that was it. I blew through my savings quickly with nights at hotels and eating in restaurants.

I have never relied on others to support me, whether family members, friends, or a government agency. For me it was a point of pride but also a realization that no one really cared and it was up to me to do whatever was necessary to survive. It comes down to attitude and mental toughness.
