Introducing Status Coup's NEW Reporter!

Ashley Bishop joins us after years of freelance reporting on labor, worker exploitation, and even non-profit corruption in Ecuador!

Hey folks, it’s Jordan.

I am excited to introduce to you our first-ever full-time reporter hire—Ashley Bishop. Since 2022, Bishop has done freelance reporting and commentary for various independent, worker-oriented news outlets including Jacobin, The Nation, The Real News Network, Atmos, and The Chief Leader.

Before that, she spent nearly a decade working on and then traveling to Ecuador to create the documentary film, Circus Ecuador, that exposed the corruption of the neoliberal NGO model in the Global South. Through her documentary filmmaking, Ashley built sources on-the-ground in Ecuador, conducted interviews, and did video shooting (the documentary premiered at the 2018 Slamdance Film Festival and received the Special Jury Award for Social Change at the Alaska International Film Festival).

During her reporting on-the-ground in Ecuador, Bishop gained a deep understanding for the often chaotic and unpredictable nature of in-the-trenches reporting—including several instances where conditions and dynamics became dangerous. Despite the risks, Bishop jumped head first into the story.

Personally, she has also been on the receiving end of the predatory capitalist hells-cape we all live under. Her experiences as a working person have instilled in her a passion for elevating working class voices in a sea of endless corporate media propaganda that erases their voices.

At Status Coup, Ashley will be a jack-of-all-trades, covering a range of stories—from worker exploitation to workers fighting back; environmental disasters and corporate sacrifice zones; the growing list of water crises’ spreading across America, political corruption and political movements fighting back, and the growth of fascism and authoritarianism on our doorstep!

Ashley will be reporting both ON-THE-GROUND and in-studio for us, so be on the lookout for her!
