Reporter Jordan Chariton was ON-THE-GROUND outside Delaney Hall in Newark, New Jersey, one year after the facility reopened as an ICE detention center.
Outside the barbed wire and concrete, people had gathered not just to protest, but to care for each other — with food, diapers, legal support, hygiene supplies, translation, music, and community.
That’s where Jordan met Gabriella Soto.
Her husband, Martin, has been detained inside Delaney Hall for four months after ICE picked him up while he was out on a diaper run.
Gabriella told Jordan that Martin has dropped from 158 pounds to 129 pounds while detained. She described dirty salad, expired tuna, delayed medical care, barely any sleep, no privacy, and treatment that depends on the mood of the guards.
But what she most wanted people to know was who Martin is:
A father. Her first love. Someone who has done everything for his kids.
“He doesn’t deserve this.”
This is despicable!! There is no words for what this government is doing, except evil pure evil. I would not be surprised if we get into a civil war because of this.
Abolish ICE immediately if not sooner. Reading stories of their inhumane treatment, feeding rotting, poisoned food, lack of sleep because of blaring lights, refusing their medication and children and women being raped men being beat to a bloody pulp.
