Status Coup reporter JT Cestkowski has been covering the hotly contested Wisconsin gubernatorial race VERY closely this year — and it seems like the mainstream media is just starting to catch up.
Early on, JT asked the question that might end up being the determining factor behind Democratic Socialist Francesca Hong winning the state’s Democratic primary on Aug. 11. While hosting a Democratic Gubernatorial candidate forum on June 2, JT asked the candidates, “Do you support a one-year or longer moratorium on data center construction in Wisconsin?”
To the shock of many in the room, Hong was the ONLY one to say “yes.” It wasn’t too much of a shock to us.
Now, outlets like Semafor are just getting to the nitty-gritty of what we already knew. In an article published on July 31, Semafor decried “Progressives’ Midwest insurgency is powered by the growing data center backlash” — which is no surprise to us, as we’ve also been reporting on people across the U.S. opposing the large A.I.-driven data centers being built in their backyards.
While many of the other candidates who responded “no” to JT’s questions gave winded responses, Hong was direct and clear. And with this knowledge, Semafor seems surprised that Hong continues to stand fully by her “Control-Alt-Delete” platform, first introduced in January 2026, as an effort to “rein in A.I.” in her home state.
Semafor reports that Hong, 37, is headed toward the closely watched primary “as the clear favorite over a panicked establishment,” with “Grassroots opposition to data centers has exploded” since 2025. Candidates like Hong and Michigan Senatorial candidate Abdul El-Sayed are striking fear in establishment Democratic candidates in their races with their opposition to data centers and “Medicare for All,” among other initiatives resonating with voters.

Further, DURING THE FORUM, the topic of labor organizations setting up the forum tasked JT with asking about was “AI and Outsourcing,” but he steered the conversation toward data centers because at the time, he was reporting on the ground for Status Coup on Hyperscale data center projects in his home state and hearing firsthand how pissed off many Wisconsinites were about them.
What makes this moment for Hong when answering JT’s question so emphatically is what else was happening across the country — and the ability to be multiple places, covering on-the-ground news that legacy media doesn’t want you to see.
