"F*ck You Nazi!" Failed Bombs at Anti-Muslim Protest Outside Zohran's Mansion

On March 7, our videojournalist Jon Farina covered an anti-Muslim hate protest led by far-right extremist Jake Lang. Lang and a small band of 20 supporters rallied outside New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s mansion for a so-called “Stop the Islamic Takeover of New York City” protest (breaking news: there is no Islamic takeover of NYC).

Lang and his band of bigots were met by over 100 counter-protesters demanding they get the hell out of New York.

“Fuck you Nazis!” one of the large crowd of counter-protesters screamed at Lang and co. Lang, in his trademark racist schtick, paraded around walking a goat chanting “leave the goats alone, Muslims!”

“Nazis are on the run!” a counter protester said as the much larger group of counterprotestors continued to try and chase Lang and his supporters off. Amidst the standoff, NYPD can be seen guarding Lang and his anti-Muslim band of bigots.

“Is NYPD defending Nazis now…keeping them safe?” a counter-protester shouted at NYPD.

As the clash continued, our videojournalist Farina turned his shoulder and saw a man running with what looked like a duct-taped soccer ball—with a fuse lit. As soon as Farina saw smoke smoldering from it, he saw the man toss the device over the crowd toward Lang and his supporters.

After the man tossed the device, he ran the opposite way chanting “Allahu Akbar.” Initially nobody reacted—unaware what the device was. Lang and his supporters screamed it might be a bomb and started running; NYPD started moving away from the device and instructed counter-protesters to do the same.

As counter protesters ran in the other direction, Farina saw another device—left idle on a sidewalk—smoking a few feet away from. Next thing he knew, NYPD was arresting an individual.

Fortunately neither device, which NYPD would later confirm were homemade bombs, detonated—and nobody was hurt. Two men, Emir Balat, 18, and Ibrahim Nikk Kayumi, 19, who are reportedly from Pennsylvania, have been arrested in relation to the failed bomb attempt.

According to NYPD, the men’s failed bombing attempt was inspired by ISIS.

We are extremely grateful the bombs failed to detonate—as our videojournalist Jon Farina could have been gravely injured or straight up killed (as could the over 100 of others there). This is a reminder that independent, bootstraps, ON-THE-GROUND journalism brings with it risks. In an open society, you never know what kind of people are coming to a protest, what their intent is, and what kind of weapons—or homemade bombs—they may be carrying.
