Status Coup reporter Jordan Chariton will speak EXCLUSIVELY LIVE with Martin Soto, the ICE prisoner who led the hunger strikes in the detention center for unsafe conditions and inhumane treatment of detainees. Martin was released from Elizabeth Detention Center in Elizabeth, NJ, on Tuesday, Oct. 6. He'll talk to Martin about what it was like in the prison, what ICE agents were like, and more.
The livestream is scheduled to begin at 12:45 p.m.

BACKGROUND: Status Coup was LIVE for WEEKS outside of Delaney Hall in Newark, NJ, in the spring as protests against the inhumane treatment of detainees happened behind the barbed wire gates of the facility.
Protesters eventually brought barricades to block an ICE vehicle they believed was part of an attempt to transfer Soto, one of the leaders of the prison hunger strike.
Martin’s wife, Gabriella Soto, was a force outside the prison while her husband was inside—she was outspoken and consistent, demanding media attention to expose what she says her husband and others are enduring inside. Families and advocates feared ICE was trying to retaliate against Martin because Gabriela helped bring national attention to Delaney Hall’s conditions.
These May protests were sparked by a hunger and labor strike over alleged conditions inside Delaney Hall, including worms, moldy food, black mold, lack of privacy, and other human rights violations.

Biden extended contracts to private immigration jails despite reports of ‘horrific’ conditions AS Congress, federal watchdogs and advocates call for closures of facilities as DHS inspector general reports medical shortages, sanitation violations and neglect of detainees.
“Congress allocates over $3bn a year so the US government can maintain the largest immigration detention apparatus in the world,” said Jesse Franzblau, senior policy analyst with the National Immigrant Justice Center.
