BREAKING: Amazon REFUSES to Evacuate Workers Despite Suspected Gas Leak & Workers Getting Sick
"I almost passed out twice," Albany NY Amazon worker says; workers have been kept outside in freezing cold for two hours as Amazon refused to send them home
Status Coup just broke yet another dangerous example of Amazon’s reckless disregard for its workers safety and health. Jordan Chariton interviewed ALB1 Amazon worker Heather Goodall about workers reporting a strong odor in the warehouse this morning between 8 and 9 am eastern.
By 10:30/11 am eastern, workers were reporting symptoms of nausea, headaches, and coughing. At the same time, workers learned maintenance was on the roof—looking into a potential gas leak—yet workers were not evacuated. “No we’re not going to be evacuating, operations at full capacity,” Heather told us ALB1 manager Nick said in response to safety workers calling for Amazon to evacuate.
As noon eastern approached, Goodall informed managers she was going to call OSHA—suddenly, 15 minutes later, Amazon finally evacuated workers. Workers were then left outside in freezing 25-30 degree temperature for over two hours. When a cold worker asked HR if workers left, would they lose some of their allotted unpaid time off (UPT) hours, HR said yes. Since Amazon workers are at risk of termination if their UPT hours dip into the negative, a worker asked HR if workers who were nearing negative UPT hours would be terminated if they left the cold—HR said yes.
