Needless to say, this was not great for my body and I began experiencing back pain…

Then came Standing Rock.

There, a “short” work day was 13-14 hours a day. Most days were 16-18 hours—often having to jog or sprint away from rubber bullets, tear gas, and more (on rough terrain in The Great Plains). And, if any of you were there, you likely tripped on ice at some point or had some type of wear and tear on your body.

At one point in November 2016 at Standing Rock, I fell down a medium-sized hill right on my lower back. At that point, I was in severe pain and probably should have stopped working for a week or two but—the story was too important and my adrenaline, and some medicinal assistance, took over.

By mid-2017, at 30 years old, I was struggling bending and walking. I tried a chiropractor and, stupidly, listened to him when he said I didn’t need an MRI…

Then came February 2018.

I started suffering excruciating muscle spasms down my left side—my hamstring and calf. My left foot went completely numb. The MRI showed my L5 disc was bulging into the S1 sciatic nerve. See MRI below.

When the doctor did a reflex test on my achilles, there was no reflex at all. Based on the muscle spasms, foot numbness, and loss of reflex—my doctor said it was very likely there was a piece of my L5 disc that had broken off and was stuck in my spinal cavity . The doctor said if I didn’t get surgery immediately, I’d most likely loose feeling in my left foot permanently.

At this point I could not walk without excruciating pain and laid in bed on my stomach for 2 days before surgery.

Knock on wood, since that 2018 surgery—and a follow-up 2019 procedure to clean out some smaller pieces that were still lodged in there—I have never had that level of severe pain again.

Unfortunately, at 39 years young now, my L5 disc between my vertebrae are very narrow, with most of the actual disc “jelly”…

That was three years ago; I just got an MRI the other day for which I haven’t seen the results yet. Based on how I feel now—particularly after falling backward on my lower back after New Jersey state police launched a flash bang grenade at my feel— I am assuming the already diminishing space between my vertebrae is even smaller.

Essentially, due to that degenerative L5 disc, I have a lot of compression on my lower spine and back, resulting in my lower back occasionally pulling, chronic stiffness, and tightness and muscle spasms in my lower body: hips, quads, hamstrings, calfs, and foot. Although the hunger strike is dwindling, lead organizers tell Status Coup there are still a small group of prisoners abstaining from eating—and a large number of prisoners still engaging in a labor strike (the latter of which is infuriating the for-profit prison operator GEO Group, forcing it to have to pay vendors to replace the work prisoners are refusing to do).

This emergency press conference is being held in response to hundreds of prisoners —who have still yet to go before a judge or obtain any due process—being transferred out of Delaney Hall over the last 48 hours (starting overnight two nights ago). Anti-Delaney Hall organizers estimate at least 400 prisoners have been transferred out over the last 48 hours in retaliation of the ongoing protests happening outside Delaney Hall. Sources tell Status Coup many of those prisoners—the majority of them men but some also being women—have been transferred to ICE prisons in Louisiana, Colorado, Pennsylvania, and elsewhere…

With their families having no idea where they have been taken.

As a result of the mass transfers/abduction, female prisoners who had ended their hunger strike are now pledging to re-launch the strike in opposition to these mass transfers. There is also concern among some organizers that, in addition to these prisoners being transferred by ICE as a form of retaliation against the ongoing protests outside the prison—ICE may be trying to create space in Delaney Hall in preparation for an escalation in raids/abductions in the tri-state area ahead of the World Cup (which starts at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium on Saturday June 13th).

“Last night [June 9th] members of the coalition started hearing that at least 5 member of unit 1 (the women’s unit) were being transferred. We later learned that they were being transferred to Colorado. Later in the night members began hearing about people in the men’s units being transferred. We believe as many as 90 people were transferred. We know of 11 women who were transferred last Saturday are in the Richwood facility in Louisiana. At about 12:30pm two large transport vans left the facility.

The women who are left are very upset about the transfers and have committed to renewing their hunger and labor strike starting today. Dozens of the women have committed to participating. They are particularly upset about the recent transfers. One of the women refused to go and was forcibly taken out in handcuffs.

These are their demands-

• Release all the women, with priority given to women under the age of 21, women with medical conditions, and mothers.

• Initiate and carry to completion independent investigations of all allegations of abuse. Women report that they have made multiple complaints of sexual abuse against a female officer.

• Immediately restore all visitation privileges so that mothers, daughters, and family members can maintain meaningful contact with their loved ones.

• Expand access to legal representation and support. Many women detained at Delaney Hall face complex immigration proceedings without attorneys or adequate legal assistance. Continued pro bono legal representation is needed to ensure individuals have meaningful access to due process.

• GEO must contract cleaning services, so that people are not threatened to do labor for the benefit of a multibillion dollar corporation.

• GEO must immediately hire new qualified medical staff including nurses and doctors available 24/7 to respond to emergencies. Nurses mistreat people and give people incorrect medications medical attention is routinely denied.

• GEO must immediately replace its current food supplier to meet basic nutritional and health standards. This includes providing healthy high quality meals that accommodate medical, religious, and dietary needs.

• GEO must repair the plumbing and HVAC in particular the second bathroom in the women’s unit and all bathrooms of the facility. In addition to ventilation, air conditioning/circulation, water temperature controls, and drinking water systems.

• GEO must provide safe drinking water. If safe drinking water cannot be guaranteed through faucets and water fountains, then bottled water should be brought into the units and made available through the commissary.

• GEO is responsible for providing staff training, accountability systems and oversight, and security personnel changes to ensure dignified treatment of detained people”

Status Coup has learned that CNN, the self-described world-wide leader in news, is still paying Rahm Emanuel—the establishment corporate Democrat who served as Ambassador to Japan, Chicago Mayor, chief of staff to President Obama, and a three-term U.S. Congressman—as a paid contributor while simultaneously providing him potentially tens of thousands of dollars in free advertising for his soon-to-be announced 2028 presidential campaign.

A source familiar with Emanuel’s CNN appearances confirmed to Status Coup that Emanuel is still a paid CNN contributor, with an official title of Senior Political & Global Affairs Commentator, despite him all-but officially launching his 2028 presidential campaign.

That de-facto campaign has been actively aided by CNN on its airwaves; for example, on June 8th, CNN had Emanuel on its morning show “CNN News Central” as anchor Kate Boulduan cheerily asked him about his recent bicycle tour across New Hampshire.

For decades, New Hampshire has served as the critical first-in-the-nation primary on the Democratic presidential primary calendar.

“Why did you do this and what did you hear?” Bolduan offered up as a softball to Emanuel about his bike tour through the Granite State. Emanuel was then afforded the opportunity to provide an action-packed sales pitch with accompanying visual propaganda: as he described biking 13,000 miles and conducting six town halls, CNN aired video of Emanuel valiantly biking through the state.

To air a presidential campaign advertisement on a network like CNN, most presidential candidates would have to pay tens of thousand of dollars. In this case, Emanuel, while still on CNN’s payroll, got a plush free advertisement.

“I’ve been upfront about it,” Emmanuel said during the interview about his plans to run for president. He joined CNN as a paid political commentator in February, 2025.

Bouldan’s interview of Emanuel amounted to more than free airtime for a potential presidential candidacy (which other cable news networks, major newspapers and digital outlets have provided before). In this case, the candidate is still getting paid by the network—essentially making CNN a de-facto Super Pac for a presidential candidate.

For those who still have 2016 Trump PTSD, a reminder: Donald Trump received billions of dollars in free publicity from TV news and other news outlets during the 2016 election cycle.

A source confirmed to Status Coup News that CNN maintains a policy regarding who may serve as on-air talent. The cable news broadcaster does not allow current lawmakers or candidates to work as contributors, but Emanuel appears to be capitalizing on a loophole in the policy so long as he does not officially declare his candidacy.

Until then, he can tour swing states and deliver speeches to prospective voters to his heart’s content—and then promote it on CNN’s airwaves. CNN, for its part, has so far encouraged this campaigning while Emanuel reaps the benefits of not having to pay for it like most traditional campaigns.

Although corporate media institutions like CNN have diminished in influence amidst the rise of independent media outlets (like Status Coup), this type of free advertising for Emanuel is critical for a soon-to-be-launched presidential candidate trying to position himself a likely crowded Democratic primary field.

SUPPORT STATUS COUP AS LOW AS $5/MONTH

CNN still carries a healthy volume of viewers age 65 and older—which happens to be the most reliable and consistent primary voting demographic in America. As of 2024, CNN’s median audience age was 67 to 68; that same year, in the 2024 presidential election, voters age 65+ made up 75 percent of the individuals who voted as a share of the voter population.

Emanuel has spent decades inside the bowels of the Democratic political machine, most notably as President Barack Obama’s chief of staff when the administration declined to prosecute Wall Street bankers for their role in causing the 2008 housing crash and resulting Great Recession.

He next served two terms as mayor of Chicago, implementing a massive wave of gentrification while covering up the police murder of 17-year-old Black teen Laquan McDonald until after his reelection. He also attempted to crush a public teachers’ strike.

Emanuel was so politically toxic, he could only obtain an obscure position under President Joe Biden, serving as ambassador to Japan.

Emanuel’s neoliberal resume is likely attractive to a billionaire class disorganized in the face of rising progressive challengers to the Democratic establishment; that list includes Graham Platner in Maine, New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and Dr. Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan.

Billionaire David Ellison, who already owns CBS News among other media properties, is attempting to purchase CNN’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery. Ellison’s changes at CBS have illustrated a clear bias in favor of President Trump—and have led to accusations from former staff of pressure to infuse overt right-wing political bias into major political news stories.

Emanuel is cozy with the wealthy and powerful. His not-a-campaign-but-really-is-a-campaign has proposed a regressive 10 percent tax on gambling and prediction markets, legitimizing the latter and ignoring the redistributive potential of a wealth tax.

As a more glib example of Emanuel’s comfort with wealth and power: after his appearance on CNN, he was seen courtside at the NBA playoffs two seats down from comedian Larry David and four down from billionaire Robert Kraft. Seats similar to Emanuel’s reportedly were on offer for more than $130,000.

CNN declined to comment for this story.

I am proud to say that our journalistic pressure—hell, shouting—at Newark police and Newark’s Democratic Mayor Ras Barak just defeated a HIGHLY ILLEGAL and HIGHLY unconstitutional policy implemented to, in my opinion, suppress the ongoing anti-ICE protests at Delaney Hall ICE prison as the prisoner hunger and labor strike now enters Day 19 (I will be back out there later today)

Let me walk you through step-by-step what happened. I know your time is limited, but I encourage you to read this entire story as it has major political, journalistic, and first amendment ramifications.

On Saturday, as I prepared to head to Delaney Hall to cover the latest nights of protests—in pain as I continue dealing with chronic back issues—my colleague and Status Coup videojournalist Jon Farina informed me Newark police was not allowing journalists to arrive in front of Delaney Hall with protective gear (PPE) including respiratory masks and eye goggles. They were also blocking backpacks, which in our case is a major issue considering our LIVEU broadcasting unit, the live-streaming equipment we use, rests on Jon’s back as a backpack.

The city of Newark was essentially leaving journalists and protesters to stand as sitting ducks in the face of Trump’s masked ICE storm troopers —who for 2+ weeks have been firing at and attacking protester with:

• Tear gas

• Rubber bullets

• Pepper balls

• Pepper spray

• Bear mace

• Batons

• Tasers

• Pushing protesters into incoming traffic

Obviously, unarmed protesters, and journalists, having the ability to wear protective gear is an OBVIOUS necessity and, in the case of some of the above, a life and death matter.

“This must be a mistake,” I told Jon. I was so sure of this because, in over a decade of reporting ON-THE-GROUND across the country—in extremely violent and fascist conditions including at the 2016/2017 Standing Rock protesters—I have never experience police or politicians blocking journalists or protesters from wearing PPE.

But Newark police did indeed block me from entering the protest area with my respirator and goggles. In response, I journalistically WENT OFF.

“You can’t tell journalists you can’t have protective gear! You can’t tell journalists they can’t protect themselves from gas, pepper balls—who’s ordering this?”

“I don’t know…the city,” a cop—who looked like he had seen a ghost—told me, refusing to directly answer whether these orders were coming from Mayor Baraka.

“You’re telling people they can’t bring protective gear so they can be sitting ducks,” I shot back. Incredulously, the officer asked me: “Sitting ducks to what?”

Yes, he actually said that.

Perhaps as a symbol for the lawless, fascist state of our country, on both sides of the aisle, it soon started DOWN POURING rain, hale, wind, and bursts of lightning.

We still went LIVE for nearly 3 hours—without protective gear.

Here is just one of many examples of the jeopardy Mayor Baraka’s lawlessness put both journalists and protesters in.

“Tonight press weren’t allowed to bring PPE,” videojournalist Sandi Bachom tweeted. At 82 years old, she is still out there risking her safety to show the ugly face of police and paramilitary crackdowns on protesters in America. “Full face gas mask,” she continued. “We had to ditch at the check point. I’m 82 years old. I need all the help I can get.”

I wasn’t going to let this lawlessness stand.

I reached out to the ACLU and other lawyers. As I thought, several attorneys told me this was completely illegal and unconstitutional.

Here is Weston Rowland, an attorney who has been involved with lawsuits on behalf of journalists, including Status Coup, against the LAPD’s lawless attacks on journalists during ICE protests in 2025:

There is no statute or court precedent that authorizes police to order journalists or peaceful protesters to remove protective gear like masks or goggles. Under settled First Amendment law, restrictions on newsgathering and assembly are presumptively invalid unless the government proves they're content-neutral and narrowly tailored to a real, significant interest — and critically, that burden is on the government, not on journalists.

The City hasn't identified any legal authority or safety justification, and that silence is itself the most telling fact. As well, a blanket order forcing people to remove masks also runs into the ADA: for individuals who are immunocompromised or have respiratory or other qualifying conditions, a mask can be a necessary health protection, and a government order stripping that away — with no exception or accommodation — risks denying disabled people equal access to a public space and public protest, which Title II of the ADA prohibits.

So there are problems with these kinds of orders and police agencies would better serve themselves and the press if they were prepared to provide answers that backup any claims that their orders are lawful.

When I reached out to Newark Mayor Ras Baraka’s office asking what exact legal statute, code, or law they were following to block journalists and protesters from protecting themselves with PPE gear, they predictably tried to pass the buck.

“Looping in the Public Safety Press team for review and response to some of your questions below,” the Mayor’s communications director responded to my questions.

I would not allow the Mayor to worm out of lawlessly working to endanger journalists and protesters.

“I don't need comment from the Public Safety Press Team,” I repied. “I need comment from the Mayor of Newark as the buck stops with him and his office. Officers told us that this order was coming from the city.”

Nearly three hours later, the city’s top lawyer responded with unconstitutional and lawless jibber jabber.

Response from Newark Corporation Counsel Kenyatta Stewart:

“We can and did restrict masks and face coverings that obscured a person’s identity because they made it difficult to identify individuals engaged in criminal activity and for public safety purposes. The goal was to allow people to peacefully protest without those demonstrations being disrupted by efforts to identify wrongdoers.

“The City of Newark fully supports peaceful protest and the constitutional right to assemble. Our goal throughout has been to protect the public and maintain safety while preserving the rights of those participating in lawful demonstrations. The policies implemented were intended to help ensure the safety of everyone on site, especially protestors, members of the media, and public safety personnel.

“Finally, the Newark Police Division was the only law enforcement agency involved in the operation not using masks or tear gas.”

“Flatly unconstitutional,” an ACLU attorney responded to me when I sent this response to them, adding that anonymous speech is also protected speech. Another lawyer noted there is serious doubt any mask ban would be constitutional.

ANOTHER lawyer pointed out that the Mayor’s reckless PPE ban also would run afoul of the American With Disabilities Act (ADA) considering their may be disabled protesters and/or journalists who require PPE protection for a variety of issues.

So, I went live with my colleague JT Cestkowksi yesterday morning, raising hell about the Mayor’s lawlessness and recklessness—followed by spinelessly trying to pass the buck and act like it wasn’t him leaving protesters and journalists to lie as sitting ducks in the face of Trump’s masked storm troopers.

After a day of our shaming and pressure from Status Coup and press freedom organizations/attorneys, Mayor Baraka relented:

“They’re letting everyone in today—no bag or PPE check,” a press freedom organization staffer told me last night.

A lead anti-Delaney Hall organizer—who is not part of the recent ICE protests sparked by the ongoing 14-day Delaney Hall prisoner hunger and labor strike—told Status Coup she received a call from the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office 15 minutes before NJ state police arrived in full militarized force on the streets outside Delaney Hall.

The organizer told Status Coup she was given a “heads up” from the AG’s office that an ICE shift change was imminent and "not to be alarmed" that police would be there to help facilitate the ICE shift change.

That facilitation by state police turned into a war zone on the streets of Newark.

Over the weekend, Democratic New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill deployed her state police to wage a BRUTAL UNDECLARED WAR on unarmed anti-ICE protesters and journalists.

“Somebody’s gonna get killed out here!” our brave videojournalist Jon Farina screamed amidst a barrage of flash bang grenades. “The state police are gonna kill somebody tonight!” he screamed while grenades were fired at him and protesters.

Over several hours, NJ state police:

• Fired an UNRELENTING BARRAGE of flash bang grenades at point blank range smack dab into the middle of densely packed groups of unarmed protesters. If one of those grenades ended up directly hitting someone, it could KILL OR MAIM THEM.

• Deployed an UNRELENTING BARRAGE of tear gas at unarmed protesters and journalists, causing injury to protesters’ and journalists eyes and lungs while also impairing their vision at a chaotic time where they needed to be able to see their surroundings as threatening projectiles were launched at them.

• Fired an UNRELENTING BARRAGE of pepper balls, rubber bullets, and other so-called “less lethal” ammunition smack dab into the middle of densely packed unarmed protesters and journalists.

• For several minutes, refused to allow a badly injured Associated Press photographer—who was so injured she was placed in a wheelchair—to exit the street and go to the hospital. “I’m begging you I’m in so much pain!” injured

  AP photographer Angelina Katsanis yelled at NJ state police. They finally allowed her through after 4 minutes.

• Injured yours truly after firing a flash bang grenade right at my cameraman and my feet. After it went off, I fell backwards onto my lower back—which I’ve already had 2 surgeries on—and immediately felt my back lock up. I had to essentially crawl to the nearby grass because I could not stand without pain.

• Created an illegal curfew for press and threatened to arrest our videojournalist Jon Farina if he didn’t stop covering protests and leave the area. Jon refused to leave (we will have a separate Substack post on that).

People detained inside Delaney Hall launched a hunger and labor strike after months of alleged abuses — including worms and moldy food, black mold, lack of privacy, delayed medical care, and dehumanizing treatment.

Martin Soto — a hunger strike leader whose wife Gabriela Soto has become a force of nature exposing conditions inside Delaney Hall — was transferred early this morning to Elizabeth Detention Center, another ICE detention facility in New Jersey.

Now, families and advocates fear ICE may be preparing to transfer more detainees to out-of-state detention centers in an attempt to break up the ongoing hunger strike.

We’re being told ICE agents have arrived with a BearCat-style vehicle and roughly a dozen law enforcement vehicles, with dozens of agents forming a perimeter outside the facility. Many agents appear to be masked, despite New Jersey’s law limiting face coverings by law enforcement.

New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill was also reportedly denied entry today.

Status Coup reporter Jordan Chariton is LIVE outside Delaney Hall ICE detention center in Newark, New Jersey, where protesters had brought barricades to block an ICE vehicle they believed was part of an attempt to transfer Martin Soto, a leader of the prison hunger strike.

Now, advocates say the ACLU has been working with the U.S. Attorney’s Office and that the office has given assurances that Martin will NOT be moved.

Martin has reportedly lost nearly 30 pounds while detained inside Delaney Hall.

His wife, Gabriella Soto, has become a force outside the prison — speaking out every day, demanding media attention, and exposing what she says her husband and others are enduring inside.

Families and advocates feared ICE was trying to retaliate against Martin because Gabriela helped bring national attention to Delaney Hall’s conditions.

This comes as people detained inside the facility have launched a hunger and labor strike over alleged conditions including worms and moldy food, rampant black mold, lack of privacy, and other human rights violations.

Technically Kelly is being charged with two counts of disorderly conduct for offensive language, D.C. Code § 22–1321, for hurling insults at MAGA.

Kelly was offered a plea deal—and declined as to not normalize this attack on Americans’ first amendment rights.

“I was pretty much scolding them for their bad decisions, but I believe that’s protected under first amendment rights,” Kelly told our Allen-DuPraw. “I am here fighting a trial, standing for my first amendment rights. My protest style is agitational, it’s loud, it’s vulgar.”

Kelly was on the front lines of Minneapolis ICE protests every day, routinely screaming—and cursing—at ICE and Border Patrol agents. He called them traitors and condemned them for violating the constitution and the rights of both U.S. citizens and undocumented immigrants.

Along with journalism Don Lemon and other protesters, Kelly was arrested for protesting at a St. Paul, Minneapolis church in January.

Outside his D.C. trial, Kelly told us normal protest is no longer going to cut it in Donald Trump’s America.

When Melania Trump made her shocking speech denying any ties to or involvement with Jeffrey Epstein, she made a declarative statement that she had never been mentioned in the Epstein Files or any criminal investigative interviews or notes.

“My name has never appeared in court documents, depositions, victim statements, or FBI interviews surrounding the Epstein matter,” she claimed in April.

In FBI interview notes released through the Epstein Files, Adriana Mucinska, a former Polish model who became one of Epstein’s recruiters, told the FBI what Melania Trump and those in the Trump inner circle have moved heaven and earth to deny…

“EPSTEIN introduced MELANIA TRUMP to DONALD TRUMP,” the FBI 302 notes summarizing the interview with Micinska, who later changed her name to Adriana Ross, stated.

Mucinska becomes the second former model in the Epstein orbit to state the disgraced sex trafficker introduced Melania to Donald Trump; a bombshell that leads to many other questions—and perhaps answers as to why the president has been hell-bent on covering up and withholding the majority of the Epstein Files.

Amanda Ungaro, a former Brazilian model who was deported by Trump’s ICE as a favor to her ex partner—sleaze ball modeling agent turned Trump Ambassador Paolo Zampoli—has claimed that Epstein introduced Melania to Trump.

As I reported in my video report on this (watch the top of this story), the timeline of all of this is highly suspect—in relation to Epstein’s so-called “suicide.”

In July 2019, Mucinska conducted her FBI interview in which she told agents that Epstein introduced the Trumps. That same month, a woman who accused Donald Trump of sexually and physically assaulting her in the early 1980s—when she was between the ages of 13-15—sat down for the first of four interviews with Trump’s FBI.

Soon after both of these interviews, in August 2019, Epstein was found dead in his cell—with Trump’s DOJ quickly declaring it a “suicide” and signaling nothing to see here. It stands to reason that Trump, who was president at the time serving his first terms, would be in the know about both of these interviews during the period they were happening.

Beyond the concerning timeline, a bigger question must be asked: with millions of Epstein Files still being hidden by the Trump regime, how many of those mention Melania Trump—or contain a devastating smoking gun related to her, her husband, and their ties to Epstein?
